Background:
This project was completed during the Methodology in Product Design course in my first year at Umeå Institute of Design, Sweden. For this course we collaborated together with the Swedish Police.
Here’s a field research video.

Focus point:
After research, I chose to redesign the police tent, as it is one of the most frequently used pieces of equipment, yet suffers from an outdated and cumbersome design. The current tent is heavy, large, and difficult for officers to carry and deploy during daily patrols (see GIF/photo below).

6 painpoints:
After several rounds of trials and user research, I identified 6 key pain points that can be addressed in future development stages. In order to fulfill these design requirements, I came up with 3 features that the design should achieve:
1) More ergonomically friendly: easy to use instead of being over time-consuming;
2) More portable: in a smaller volume;
3) More visible: the visibility can be more flexibly adjustable.

01
Handling Inconvenience

Due to the triangle’s frame being covered by canvas fabric, it’s difficult to grab it by bare hands.

02
Unnecessary Weight

Due to the reason it has to stand stablely against strong wind, extra steel cube are added on four feet.

03
Size Control

The over product now has a length of 110cm in total, which makes it hard to fit inside a police car.

04
Visibility Need

In order to achieve better visibility, the police used a new tent version which has brighter color on each side.

05
Fabric

The product currently has a bag to put in, but due to its structure it is very difficult to fold it away completely by one person.

06
Insufficient Height

The height for now is around 90 cm which is easy to be blocked by the police vehicle.
